Claude Viallat

Born in 1936 in Nîmes (France). Lives and works in Nîmes.

A French painter, since 1966, he has adopted a painting process based on prints placed on loose canvases, without stretchers.
This neutral form, repeated indefinitely, has generated a unique work on color. Color has become both the central object and subject of Claude Viallat's work. In 1969, he was a founding member of the Supports/Surfaces group.
He draws on multiple references to: Henri Matisse and Picasso, but also Simon Hantaï and the Americans Jackson Pollock, Sam Francis, Jules Olitski, Morris Louis, and Kenneth Noland. These references serve to construct a polymorphic body of work that also incorporates the practice of figurative drawing on the theme of bullfighting.
