Dorothea Tanning

Born in 1910 in Galesburg, Illinois (United States), died in 2012 in New York (United States).

American painter, publisher, sculptor, and writer, Tanning also designed sets and costumes for ballets and shows.
In 1946, she became Max Ernst's fourth wife.
He quickly introduced her to the circle of Surrealists, from whom she drew her visual language. In the 1950s, her work changed radically, as she became one of the first women to dare to reverse the erotic perspective in art.
Her paintings express the fantasies of women, considered as individuals in their own right and no longer simply the projection of men's desire.
