Erwin Wurm

Born in 1954 in Bruck an der Mur (Austria). Lives and works in Austria.

Austrian artist (sculptor and performance artist).
As a young man (in the early 1980s), he taught sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was initially inspired by conceptual and minimal art.

His work subsequently focuses on transforming banal objects into sculptures with an absurd appearance that make viewers burst out laughing. He seeks to free objects from their familiar context and give them an extraordinary meaning. Visual exploration seems to have given way to metaphysical relaxation.
With his characteristic humor, in 2013, he transformed the idea of the gherkin into a piece of jewelry (a ring, brooch, or necklace) in gold and diamonds for the Elisabetta Cipriani gallery in London.
