Born in 1936 in Malden, Massachusetts (United States)
An American painter, Stella initially gravitated toward geometric abstraction, aiming to eliminate all traces of pictorial technique or intervention by the painter's hand, and any suggestion of a sensitive relationship between the artist and his painting.
This radical work, begun in 1958, corresponds to the artist's best-known period and is generally considered crucial to the development of Minimal art, and even certain principles of Pop Art.
Less well known, however, is his other pictorial period, which developed from the mid-1970s onward: atypical and unconventional, this part of his work is sometimes referred to as "Baroquist."
