Imi Knoebel

Born December 31, 1940, in Dessau, Germany. Lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany.

A German contemporary artist. He is primarily known for his minimalist paintings and sculptures.
From 1964 to 1971, he studied with Joseph Beuys at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts, alongside Blinky Palermo.
Knoebel formed a movement of minimal art among Beuys's students. He first created the black and white Linienbilder (1966-68). Under the influence of Kasimir Malevich and his Black Square, he created sculptures with flat surfaces, made of juxtaposed panels or slats and brightly colored aluminum panels, whose alignment evokes the drawings of Piet Mondrian. In 1988, Imi Knoebel created the Kinderstern (Children's Star), a work of art that still fights for children's rights today by funding projects to defend them.
