Nicolas Buffe

A French artist based in Tokyo since 2007, Nicolas Buffe, whose heroes range from Rabelais to Tex Avery, Orlando Furioso to Super Mario, is the creator of a protean and multidisciplinary universe blending scholarly and popular culture.

Born in 1978, he belongs to a generation naturally influenced by Japanese culture, developing a passion for anime, tokusatsu, manga, and Japanese video games since childhood. Throughout his studies, he added classical works from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque periods, such as The Dream of Poliphilo, to these references. This blend of narrative and visual influences is omnipresent in his work, primarily based on the humanist notion of Serio Ludere, or playing seriously.
