Yayoi Kusama

Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan,

She created her first works (drawings and watercolors) in the 1950s, based on recurring motifs derived from childhood hallucinations, such as polka dots, which would become her trademark.

Moving to New York in 1957, she participated indirectly and in her own way in the Psychedelic and Pop Art movements.
Using various mediums (painting, photography, film, installation), Kusama also explored the fields of fashion, cinema, and literature.
She returned to Tokyo in 1973, where she was voluntarily committed to an asylum, her studio being located next door.
