Robert Indiana
Born in 1928 in New Castle, Indiana (USA). Died in 2018 in Vinalhaven, Maine (USA).

Indiana often asserted the American specificity of his work. “I’m an American sign painter” is one of his favorite self-descriptions.

This same characteristic can also be applied to the iconography of his work, which has been assimilated to Pop Art, as to his means of expression, which are often linked closely to the “hard-edge” (cold and geometric) current of American abstraction.
In 1966, he created LOVE for the city of Philadelphia, a sculpture that would make him famous the world over. He moved to Vinalhaven, a remote island community in Maine, north of Boston, in 1978.
