Born in 1971 in Constantine (Algeria). Lives and works in Paris (France).
A French artist of Algerian origin, he draws his references from both ancient and modern literature and art. Breaking taboos, he dialogues with materials (barbed wire, dynamite, cannabis resin, marble, etc.) to invent through installations, sculptures and videos. Appearing on the art scene around the year 2000, his work responds to the ebb and flow of the contemporary world, reflecting its energy and violence through powerful representations.
Disruption has been a dominant force in Adel Abdessemed’s life from a young age, and has had a profound impact on his work. His youth was marked by civil war. “It occurred to me that to be the witness of such a brutal war was the start of everything in a way. I think there has always been a deep link between chance and its witnesses. My art is that of the witness. I can identify with the concept of the artist as the witness of their own times, whatever their practice.”
